Semi-Final 1, Dress Rehearsal 1: Live report from the hall
This is how Shi saw the first rehearsal of semi-final 1 of ESC 2019 from the hall, as reported live on our Twitter (and if you’re not following us there, you should be – click here!).
She’ll be back later this evening from the press centre for a rolling live blog of this evening’s all-important jury show, where half of the points in the first semi-final will already be decided!
We're at the first dress rehearsal of semi 1 where we just restarted after a technical issue. Netta starts us off with the Israeli new trademark of many clones of the lead singer. #eurovision2019

It's very clear that Erez has more years of experience than the rest of the hosts combined. #Eurovision2019

Cyprus changed some of the camera work, so the part from the rehearsal feed on YouTube actually looks different now. She also sounded good in the hall. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019

I really like the postcards so far – they combine the location and the different feel of the dances well and manage to capture a bit of the participants' character. Can't wait for the other 38! #Eurovision2019 #Eurovision
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Sebastian sounds on key. Miracles never cease. I still get distracted by anything that isn't the song. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
How does Poland always sound like the studio version? Also, their camera work now guilts people into clapping. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Slovenia's postcard is set up in a location / setting that for israelis makes the most sense to wear white for, which I doubt anyone else will catch. It also makes them look more interesting than their staging does. #Eurovision2019 #Eurovision
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
It now officially bugs me that one of the hidden backing singers is the one saying "I'm only a friend". Otherwise: same as always. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Break after CZ. Assi asks fake Tamta if there are hard feelings there after last year. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
The crew got Hungary right in every right through but managed to somehow get stage workers into one of the shots. Oops. Joci, in case you wondered, is as perfect as always. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
For whatever reason the hall sounds like someone is trying to land a plane on top of it. It is the weirdest thing and they will have to address it soon. Not sure what is going on, but sounds like giant vents. #Eurovision2019 #Eurovision
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Whoever turned on the giant air conditioner turned it off for us in time to hear Nevena being note perfect again. And Belarus was, well, Belarus. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
I might or might have not spent most of the Belgian performance tracking the ceiling triangles moving towards Eliot. Belgium looks better overall, and there is a break after them. There is a longer break in the rehearsal and they will resume in 2minutes. #Eurovision
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Oh. They had to run a commentator test, which apparently was easier to time in this hour. #Eurovision2019 #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Can we add an award for best staging? Because Georgia. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Not sure how it was on the feed but the vocal mix for Australia was all over the place. Also seeing Australia taken on and off the stage is all sorts of hilarious. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
The green room breaks need more work… And Iceland's postcard choreography is super awesome. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
The amount of pyros in Iceland suggests they think they are Azerbaijan. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Victor, I am happy for you that all your green screen shots finally worked properly, but stop shouting at me! #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Portugal and Greece back to back is a bit of a visual overload. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Of course Serhat's postcard includes disco and dancers in pink. Equally unsurprising: his performance includes no actual singing. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Host ranking: Erez > Lucy > Bar > Assi #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Hungary is using the nanana bit for recap. Easier to remember than anything in Hungarian, I guess. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Just realized there is a security guard standing on the catwalk during the recap and voting instructions. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Dana Internatiomal starts backstage as she playbacks Bruno Mars' Just The Way You Are. They then had to stop which means I need to put myself through the horror again. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Just when I thought I was safe from the threat of the kiss cam. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
The teaser of the postcards is actually a part of the A-Ba-Ni-Bi interval and you get a tease of the remaining postcards. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Assi photo bombs Lucy as she presents the second recap. Can't decide if I hope it's in the script or not. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
From a production nerd's perspective it's really cool hearing the hosts/ production back and forth in Hebrew as they adjust things in transitions. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
I got slightly distracted by Miki performing on the catwalk a meter in front of me. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
After the first rehearsals I thought France will be one of those performances that are effective the first time around but not so much after that. I was wrong. Effective every damn time. #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
— escgo! (@escgo) May 13, 2019
Israel wraps up the songs of dress rehearsal minus the mock vote I can't be bothered with. Join us later on https://t.co/B7NOBNvxy9 for a rolling blog of the jury semi! #Eurovision #Eurovision2019
