Line-up check 2018: Macedonia

Macedonia: Eye Cue – Lost And Found

Felix: Eurovision fan A in 2023: “How did Macedonia 2018 go again?”
Eurovision fan B: “Like this… but also like this… and like this, too….”
Eurovision fan A: “Oh yeah, I remember these Macedonian entries. Were they really all in the same year?!”

Yes, without any doubt, Macedonia 2018 has its quirks. And that alone isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Despite what some think, three entries in one song is not fundamentally problematic. What is problematic is that the weak moments of “Lost And Found” are more memorable than its better parts. While I’m listening to it, I find myself liking the entry, but that’s it. The song isn’t sustainable at all.

Last year, Macedonia had a quite strong entry but ruined its chances with a dramatically pale performance. They can only do better this year. But the song, despite being liked by some fans, is nothing to love. There aren’t a lot of friends in Macedonia’s semi-final either, so I don’t expect Eye Cue to qualify for the final.

Prediction: Personal:

😊🤔

Martin: I’m with Felix actually, I don’t think a song with multiple personalities is inherently a bad thing. There’s something about that cod-reggae beat that really kills the momentum of “Lost And Found” though. I’d love them to qualify on the strength of the chorus alone, but I have my doubts.

Shi: I live in San Francisco, a city so indecisive about weather that it changes seasons a few times every week. Sometimes a few times a day. Don’t like the weather? Wait a few hours, you’ll get another. Macedonia is the musical version of that. Like San Francisco, it’s lovely. But also like San Francisco, no matter how beautiful you think it is, you’ll soon be doomed. You’re going to freeze, and Macedonia are going to stay in the semi.
