2016 round-up: Belarus, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark decide

by | Feb 13, 2016 | Uncategorized

Let’s take a look at the countries that have selected their entry for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest since our last round-up a few weeks ago!

We begin with Belarus, where Alexander Ivanov, better known by the stage name Ivan, will attempt to return the ex-Soviet nation to the grand final with the song “Help You Fly“:

In Spain, an enjoyable (and remarkably short!) national final resulted in a comfortable victory for bookmakers’ favourite Barei and her rhyming number “Say Yay!“, which will be qualified directly for the grand final in Stockholm thanks to the country’s “big five” status:

Another widely predicted victory came to pass in Austria: Despite the initial jury vote going against her, Zoë triumphed on her second attempt at winning a ticket to ESC. She will join a small group of people to have performed in French for a country where it isn’t a native language – in the hope that “Loin d’ici” will significantly improve on last year’s nul-points result for Austria:

In neighbouring Switzerland, Canadian singer Rykka – pronounced to rhyme with “biker” – won Saturday night’s Entscheidungsshow and will represent the neutral nation in Stockholm with “The Last Of Our Kind“, which she also co-wrote:

And finally in this round-up, televoters in Denmark ignored the expected frontrunners to give a slightly surprising victory to boyband Lighthouse X and their song “Soldiers Of Love“:

The next events on the Eurovision calendar are the Georgian and Bosnian song reveals (tonight and Friday respectively) followed by another busy night on Saturday, with the Icelandic final and heats in Estonia, Finland, Hungary and Sweden. Why not join us in our chat and watch them with us?
