Last year’s host, Denmark, is one of those rather unstable countries. On the one hand, the country recently won twice within 15 years. On the other hand, there have been bottom-5 placements and failures to qualify at all.
After a few years with mostly good results, 2015 could well be a bad one for Denmark at Eurovision again. The Danish choice was made in a national final where the most notable song was notable because it was quite inspired by a successful former Danish entry. If you need to remember either, listen to this. But it isn’t like that was the only other option. There have been other entries that were unremarkable, but still somewhat nice (e.g. Suitcase). Instead, though, Denmark is sending a very… Danish-sounding song. That wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t becoming so boring. Denmark 2015 is the definition of “dated”. Furthermore, the members of Anti Social Media seem like they were randomly brought together from time capsules of different decades, none of them being a recent one.
Their song, The Way You Are, is a meaningless ditty in a style that won’t wake up anyone beyond Denmark and Skåne. Just like southern neighbour Germany’s tired striving for authenticity, the Danish sound has become boring. For some time now. Danish backing singers in red dresses, clapping to the beat in a rather strained way, were already pathetic in 2004. That’s when Tomas Thordarson tried to qualify for the final – and failed. It hasn’t become any more innovative in 2015.
Coming to my verdict, I have to say that Anti Social Media might qualify, but only because the song isn’t a ballad. Once in the final, this could well end up in last place. In any case, I allow myself to guess that this will be the worst result for Denmark since DQ’s failure to reach the final in 2007.
