2014 sees the return of Poland to the Eurovision family after a few years out, and by golly, they haven’t half returned with a bang! Donatan and Cleo were internally chosen to fly the Polish flag in Copenhagen with their song My Słowianie (We Are Slavic) which was a HUGE hit in Poland late last year, racking up over 41 MILLION views on YouTube. You have to say that’s impressive. But will this success transfer to the Eurovision stage?
Controversial is definitely one way of describing the Polish song – especially the video which is filled with, well, let’s just say some rather risqué shots of certain body parts and an interesting use of some milk! (Best just leave it at that!) The lyrics of the song are not exactly subdued either, with Cleo singing how Slavic girls are the best because “We like to move what our mama gave us in our genes” – quite! As for the song itself, it’s not the most melodic of songs but the rap-style singing is kind of hypnotic. There’s definitely nothing else like this in this year’s line-up, that’s for sure! From the live performances I have seen, Cleo is a rather engaging performer and I think they’ll put on a good show on the Copenhagen stage.
My verdict: Whatever people think of the song, this is definitely one that will not go unnoticed, and as such I think it could pick up quite a few votes from televoters around Europe. What the juries think of it however, is another matter entirely, but I do think that the final would be less fun without this being there. Poland haven’t had much luck in the semi-final era so far, with just one qualification to their name, but I’ll stick my neck out and say that their run of bad luck is about to change. About time too.
