Ever since Moldova joined the contest, it only missed the final once – when Geta Burlacu made herself comfortable with a teddy bear on a sofa. Indeed, in the last three years Moldova has been consistently knocking on the door of the top 10, so the country is quite aware of how to do Eurovision.
What do they have for us this year? After two semi-finals, a final was held on 15 March as one of the last preselection shows of the 2014 season, where the Moldovan entry for ESC was finally chosen.
Cristina Scarlat is undoubtedly a good vocalist with a powerful voice. Her song for Copenhagen is not the easiest one to sing, but she masters the task with ease. In the national final, she was dressed as half human half robot – it will be interesting to see what dress will succeed Aliona Moon’s huge illuminated skirt on the ESC stage!
Speaking of heritage from Malmö, Wild Soul is once again a very mystical song for Moldova. While last year’s Aliona Moon sang of weather phenomenons and time, Cristina Scarlat brought the clocks right into the preview video! No seriously, this mystical style looks good on Moldova. The song itself has a quite acrobatic melody which demands a lot from Cristina, but I have no doubt that she will nail it on her night. But will it be one or two nights for her?
My verdict is that it’s definitely well written, but maybe too complicated to get the cheers from the crowds. But fans of this dark, arcane style will love it – I certainly do! I can see this qualifying quite easily, but think it’s rather unlikely that Moldova knocks on the door of the top ten once again.
