As one of the “Big Five”, France qualify directly for the final and they haven’t done particularly well recently, with Patricia Kaas giving them their one solitary top ten place in the past ten years. They are hoping to reverse that trend this year by sending the group Twin Twin, who won the national selection ahead of two other acts. Contrary to their name, Twin Twin are actually a band of three guys – Lorent, François and Patrick – although Lorent and François are actually twins!
From fan reactions, Moustache seems to be a rather love/hate song and it is currently in fifth place in our sister site ESC Nation’s Big Poll of 2014. If I had to choose one word to describe Moustache it would be “quirky”. France have been known to send quirky songs before with Les Fatals Picards and Sébastien Tellier, so this is nothing new for them. It’s catchy, and there’s definitely nothing else like this in this year’s line-up – but I think of the performances we have seen of it so far, it’s a bit messy and amateurish and it doesn’t quite come across as well live as it does in studio.
My verdict: I’m not sure about this one. I think the song is perhaps too divisive to do well and I think it will end up roughly where Amandine did last year or perhaps slightly better, though I don’t think it will be the worst performing entry of the Big Five. However, I do think it’s good for France to take a risk by sending something like this and keep the contest diverse. Unfortunately, risks don’t always pay off and with this one, I think that may be the case.
