In 2006, Finland briefly found its way out of its eternal status as a Eurovision underdog by winning the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. Ever since, the Nordic country has returned to the “wrong” half of the scoreboard – or remained stuck in the semis.
It’s the third year of UMK, and things haven’t really got any better for Finland with the successor format to Euroviisut. Krista Siegfrids reached the final last year, but her wedding party ended with a bottom-3 placing. Europe didn’t want to marry her. This year, the UMK winners got a lower score in the national final than Krista Siegfrids got in hers. Will that also transfer to the Eurovision scoreboard?
Softengine are a young rock band from Seinäjoki. Their oldest member is only 19 years old, while their youngest member wouldn’t have been allowed to take part in Malmö 2013!
Something Better isn’t the best Finnish rock song I’ve ever heard. It’s memorable after the second listen, doesn’t sound bad at all, but lacks the effect that you’d want to listen to it again. And again. And again. You don’t, even if you don’t mind guitars.
That already kind of summed up my verdict – which should be completed with my prediction, that this indeed won’t make the final in May, as it doesn’t really have an audience big enough to make an envelope for Finland happen. Nice try, Finland, but: next please. And Softengine are young enough to come up with something better in the future.
