Line-up check 2014: Belarus

Belarus were one of the first countries to choose their song for Eurovision 2014 way back in January, which seems like a lifetime ago. After a close battle, TEO won the ticket to Copenhagen on his second attempt at going to Eurovision, the first being in 2009.

TEO, real name Yuriy Vaschuk (doesn’t sound quite as glamorous, does it?), seems to be channeling a certain Robin Thicke with this one here in both his style and manner. The lyrics of the song are, quite frankly, some of the WORST I can remember in Eurovision history and when you have classics song titles such as “Boom Bang-A-Bang” and “La La La” – it really says it all! I’ve never heard anyone use Cheesecake as a term of affection and if someone used it on me, well, let’s just say the relationship wouldn’t last very long!

My verdict:
The song itself is as basic as it gets and sounds like a Latvian national final entry, and not a winning one. It’s catchy enough but I’m just not sure at all if it will get people all around Europe picking up their phones to vote for it, neither does it sound like a jury song. Because of this, I think its chances of qualifying are next to none at all, and I would be gobsmacked if it is performed on the stage on the Saturday night. It’s not terrible, it’s just THERE, and probably the worst thing that can happen to a song in Eurovision is for it to be completely forgotten about. Sadly, even after numerous listens I can hardly remember how it goes, so the omens for TEO are not good at all…
