Slovenia is my favourite of all the Balkan countries, but they haven’t had much success at Eurovision recently, with just two final appearances in 10 years. They only agreed to participate in this year’s Eurovision at the very last minute, and were given special dispensation to decide after the original deadline. Will it have been the right decision to make the trip to Copenhagen?
Tinkara Kovač is flying the Slovenian flag this year with her bilingual song Spet/Round and Round which, for me, has a touch of the 1990s to it. It’s rather traditional, and sounds quintessentially Balkan with a hint of something like The Corrs, only with a flute instead of a violin. They have also beefed the song up a bit since the national final, and the song builds more and overall sounds a lot better. Tinkara is a great and experienced performer, and I think with the right staging, this could look really good on the Copenhagen stage. I think this is key though, because it could also end up being forgotten about if it isn’t done correctly.
My verdict: Not many people are predicting Slovenia to qualify, but I do think it could surprise. I think the juries will like this and it has a pretty good spot in the running order, being the penultimate song of the semi-final. I think it could JUST squeeze through. I’m not expecting it to make great waves in the final if it does, but after three straight years of non-qualification including a dead last place in 2013, I think the Slovenian delegation would be happy with this. It’s just a shame that most of the other Balkans have decided to take a year out, because I think it would have the potential to do even better if they were around to vote for it.
