It turns out that Engelbert Humperdinck won’t be the only pensioner in Baku – at the second time of asking, the Buranovskiye Babushki will be going to the Eurovision Song Contest, having won tonight’s Russian final with the song “Party For Everybody”.
In a combined jury and public vote, they clearly beat out the other two favourites, the duets by Dima Bilan & Julia Volkova and Aida & Timati.
In Baku, the elder ladies will defend the Russian colours in the second half of the first semi-final on Tuesday 22 May, where they will be looking to maintain their country’s perfect ESC qualification record.
The official webstream of the final cut out just as the results were being announced – typical! – but Bubbs in the #esc chatroom was watching on satellite, and so we were immediately able to find out that top 3 was as follows:
1. Buranovskiye Babushki: Party For Everybody – 38.51%
2. Dima Bilan & Julia Volkova: Back To Her Future – 29.25%
3. Aida & Timati: Fantasy – 26.74%
