Netherlands: Jeangu Macrooy – Birth Of A New Age

Felix: It’s always a remarkable feeling when you listen to a song for the first time, while having saved other people’s verdicts in your brain already. This is what happened to me when I first listened to the Netherlands this year. I read something on Twitter about the Netherlands being bad. I saw various people’s top lists on social media, and the Netherlands mostly near the bottom of those lists. Now I was curious when I actually started playing “Birth Of A New Age” for the first time.

As this is my first verdict in this year’s line-up check, I take the occasion for a general announcement. In the coming weeks, you will find me writing a lot about how monotonous this year’s starting field sounds to my ears. And in this year, the Netherlands is supposed to be bad? Come on.

For once, something different sticking out of the mishmash. It has a warm and positive vibe, lots of potential for misheard lyrics (broccoli anyone?), and an overall pleasant character. I am very curious how it will be brought to the stage, and how Jeangu will deliver it, but the song alone? A tonal oasis. I like.

Martin:
“Grow” was my 2020 favourite, so this took a little getting used to. But in hindsight I’m glad it’s not a carbon copy. This feels just as personal to Jeangu as “Grow” did, only in a different way, and it guarantees some diversity in the final line-up. Approved!

Shi: As it is the case with many entries this year, it was hard to separate my initial response to the song from my feelings towards his entry last year, but I thought his presence joyful and sincere, and later on realized this is a well-disguised earworm as well. Result aside, I’m happy it’s in the final line-up.
