Lithuania: The Roop – Discoteque
Felix: Lithuania at Eurovision, that’s pretty much a mixed bag.
I first think of awkward uptempo tracks (“Attention“, “Rain of Revolution“), then inaccessible male ballads (“Nomads in the Night“, “Love“) and many other potential NQ candidates. Lithuania never had a history of catchy, sober, “cool” tracks at Eurovision. “Happy You” (which only got to Eurovision because Aivaras was lucky), “Little By Little“, “We Are The Winners“, “This Time” and the Donny Montell entries are those that come closest to a memorable, catchy pop tune, but none ever reached the coolness and danceability of “Discoteque”.
The Roop manage to activate something in the viewer. Their number electrifies, hypnotizes, captivates. That’s absolutely what you need to achieve something in the Eurovision Song Contest, and the song is one of those of which we already know how well it can work on stage: Extremely well.
There’s only one song in that semi-final that can be remotely compared, and that’s Ukraine, still different enough to make both stand out from the starting field.
If Lithuania doesn’t mess up the staging, and I doubt they even can, then it could lead to the country’s best result in Eurovision ever.

Shi: I want to like “Discoteque” more than I actually do, which is a bit unfortunate because it’s a complete package: a visual treat with a clear concept and a hook. And after a year like 2020, a line like “Let’s discoteque right at my home, It is okay to dance alone” packs a surprisingly emotional punch.
Martin: Whereas I actually wonder if that “disco at home!” message will feel a bit outdated in May 2021, when we’re all seriously bored of the whole lockdown novelty thing. Anyway, I find this fundamentally unlikeable – smug hipster nonsense, basically – but I accept it’s going to do really well.
