The winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 is “Zitti e buoni” by Måneskin from Italy! Having returned to the contest in 2011 after a long break and recorded some strong results in the meantime, this marks Italy’s third victory in the contest after 1964 (Gigliola Cinquetti) and 1990 (Toto Cutugno).
Having won the televote, Måneskin took first place overall with a total of 524 points, followed by France in second place (“Voilà” by Barbara Pravi, 499 points) and Switzerland in third (“Tout l’univers” by Gjon’s Tears, 432 points). You read that right – a Eurovision top three in 2021 and not an English-language song among them! The top five was completed by Iceland and Ukraine.
At the end of the country-by-country presentation of the national jury results, Switzerland were leading the way with a small but fairly comfortable lead over France. Then it was time for an incredibly exciting voting sequence – beginning with a remarkable moment as no fewer than four countries (consecutively!) received zero points from the public, including a double zero for the United Kingdom’s James Newman.
The final camera shots were between Måneskin and Gjon’s Tears, and while the Swiss singer got enough love from the public to retain a podium position overall, the Italian band’s comfortable televote win gave them the overall victory.
We’ll be back tomorrow with more analysis and insights, but until then, congratulations to ITALY! And here’s your ESC 2021 winner one more time:
