Line-up check 2019: Denmark
Denmark: Leonora – Love Is Forever
Shi: There are things that I find very difficult to review because they make me be the worst version of myself. I don’t do saccharine well – and that’s true for everything, not just music. You’re more likely to find me making puking noises and throwing my shoes at the screen when a romantic comedy ends in a public love declaration and marriage proposal, even though everyone around me will be awww-ing and talking about how they just adored that sweet scene. I will turn down desserts from the best places because I don’t like anything that tastes sweet, and I cannot listen to any overly sweet song without regretting the life choices I’ve made that led me to this point.
With that all said, I guess it won’t come as a surprise to learn that I can’t stand this year’s Danish entry – although even I can tell that it’s far from being the worst song in the 2019 line-up in terms of actual composition and performance, hence why it actually manages to avoid my personal bottom five (but just about).
Prediction is also very difficult, because every time I really couldn’t stand a Danish song, it ended in the top ten. Seeing the reactions to the song, I don’t think it can do that much – but I’m still fairly certain it will qualify, which means that regardless of its final position, I’ll have to deal with it twice. Watch out for flying shoes. Where are Marta and Václav when you need them?

Felix: Oh, I like sweet. Even in music. I loved “Loin d’ici”. Just as an example. But I am allergic to some kinds of sweet. Raspberries, for example. Or Denmark 2019. Is it even “sweet” though? That surely was their concept, but they executed it very poorly, in all areas. Thumbs down.
Martin: Yeah, I take the point about the sweetness – Leonora is almost a bit too harsh and brutally efficient to come across as cute and adorable in the way that Zoë did, say. I think there’s a path to the top ten for this one, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it land 22nd with a shoulder-shrug.
