Germany: Jendrik – I Don’t Feel Hate
Shi: In a year where I feel mostly indifferent to certain degrees about most entries, Germany stands out as being one of those songs where there are no in-between shades of gray but just a simple dichotomy: you either like it, or you really really don’t.
Personally, I belong to the camp of people who want to throw things at the screen by the time the first chorus comes around, and I can’t help but wondering whether the lyricist of this, who came with the unfortunately apt title, “I Don’t Feel Hate”, saw the reactions upon the entry’s release and thought, “damn, I walked right into this one.”
I’m curious about the chain of events that led Germany, as clueless as it is, to pick THIS internally. How insipid was everything else on offer for them to decide this was the least bad option? Because I doubt that anyone there really thinks that can do much better than their previous attempt (which is an extremely low bar).
I, however, don’t feel hate towards Jendrik, I just feel sorry for him: he seems like a fun guy with a lot of character who could have been entertaining to watch performing, well, anything else.

Felix: “Sister” remains my favourite song of my home country since “Glorious“. I never understood the hate for Germany 2019. This one though… once again, I just wanna hide under a carpet. It’s bad, period. And using a negative statement in the title already didn’t work well for Corinna May.
Martin: Like “Eastern European Funk”, this makes the mistake of having clever lyrics that are too quick and accented for anyone to really hear properly. If it’s presented well – and Jendrik (is that really a name?) is very engaging – it could still get decent televotes. Juries? Probably not so much.
