Malta: Destiny – Je me casse

Martin: What I admire about the Maltese Eurovision PR machine is how it works regardless of the quality of material it has to play with. Give it a borderliner like “Warrior” and it’ll bombard your inbox with promotional mails. Give it bland filler like “Walk On Water” and it’ll convince fansites to describe Ira Losco as the next international megastar. Heck, even a no-hoper like “Breathlessly” landed in the jury top 10 in its semi. In its various guises, the machine works.

So what can we expect from a package that’s significantly more commercially marketable? The fans – me included – have been waiting for Destiny to explode onto the ESC stage ever since her Junior Eurovision victory with the still-terrific “Not My Soul”. After last year’s false start, she finally gets her chance in 2021, and “Je me casse” wasted no time in zooming to the top of the betting.

Comparisons with Netta’s “Toy” are inevitable: a bigger girl singing a female empowerment anthem that’s packed with hooks. But “Toy” worked because those hooks were all equally strong, and that’s where I feel “Je me casse” falls down a little. Some sections feel like treading water, and Destiny’s personality will have to carry the song through. (And by personality, I mean more than just the “I AM GREAT” bluntness of the video.)

Still, with the head start Malta always enjoys with the juries, a televoter-friendly presentation could help this entry to go very far. I can’t quite see it as a winner though.

Prediction: Personal:

Shi:
This one is a tale of two songs in one, with one of them being stronger (and more fun) than the other. I like it overall – but I don’t LOVE it – it all just feels a bit too calculated. I agree with Martin’s prediction, though.

Felix: Is this a song? I don’t like it. But hey. “Breathlessly” was epic!
