Line-up check 2018: Our views on the second semi-final

by | Apr 20, 2018 | 2018 reviews, Eurovision, Featured

Have you been keeping up with our line-up check of the ESC 2018 entries? Each song is assigned to one of our team, and once they’ve had their say, the other team members get a brief right of reply. That way you get to see what we all think – and whether we share the same opinions or disagree wildly.

Anyway, don’t worry if you missed a post or two – here’s a round-up of what we had to say about the songs in the second semi-final. Simply click the country name to read the full review!

1. Norway
“The kind of stage presence – and face – that seem specially designed to rub some people up the wrong way.”

2. Romania
“Three minutes that pass in relative professionalism but with very little to take away from it.”

3. Serbia
“Part of me wants to believe that this is a very clever parody of every ethnic entry in Eurovision ever.”

4. San Marino
“I’m thankful that San Marino remains what it is, a peculiar and odd participant.”

5. Denmark
“Denmark could do anything and people would still automatically think: Denmark = bad, always.”

6. Russia
“This is a Russian entry. They don’t go into competition to lose, so there has to be some kind of story.”

7. Moldova
“It is all formula, zero sincerity, and should come with a Eurovision cliché trigger warning.”

8. Netherlands
“A tedious rehash of every beer-soaked bro-country cliché in the book.”

9. Australia
“It’s uplifting and positive like hardly any other song this year. But it’s also so damn generic.”

10. Georgia
“Oh, Georgia. What an addition they’ve been to the Eurovision family.”

11. Poland
“Just too vanilla to make a real impact.”

12. Malta
“If someone ever invented an online Eurovision song generator, this would be the result.”

13. Hungary
“A credibly composed and performed song without much direct competition.”

14. Latvia
“What happened to that quirky, self-confident Latvia?”

15. Sweden
“Benjamin Ingrosso, and the creative people behind his show, are excellent salesmen.”

16. Montenegro
“Vanja Radovanović feat. Balkan Allstars.”

17. Slovenia
“Someone in Slovenia must have found something good about this mess.”

18. Ukraine
“As soon as it’s over, it goes ‘plop!’… and Ukraine is lost in the bathwater.”
