Line-up check 2015: United Kingdom

by | May 11, 2015 | 2015 reviews, Uncategorized

And finally the United Kingdom, as the last country in the alphabet, is also the last country for us to cover in this year’s escgo line-up check series. Eurovision and the United Kingdom, that’s a complicated relationship, as already pointed out in our article from a couple of years ago. Bad results, UK fans being embarrassed of their entrant, that’s normality for the island state.

This year, the BBC has once again gone the route of internal selections, presenting us with Electro Velvet as the 2015 UK hopefuls. The duo is made up of Alex Larke and Bianca Nicholas, both of whom are essentially newcomers.

The project’s first single is – you guessed it – their Eurovision entry. The reaction of the UK fans? Abysmal. Not being a citizen of the United Kingdom myself, I was quite overwhelmed by the disappointed and downright hateful comments on the internet, in the escgo chat, on my Facebook feed, wherever fans are assembling to discuss Eurovision. Well, I didn’t quite understand it!

So, it’s about time that someone says something positive about UK 2015.

Still In Love With You is a catchy, infectious number. Modern beats are mixed with 1920s-style swing music, we don’t have the typical verse / chorus arrangement, at least not a very obvious one. It feels more like a three minutes long, consistent piece of music, with hardly any dynamics or variations. That doesn’t necessarily have to be a negative thing.

Three things are important to remember when discussing the United Kingdom entry this year: First, we haven’t seen the rehearsals and the staging yet. Second, it’s one of the few danceable up-tempo songs in the line-up. And third, it’s not UK fans who have to vote for it. For a good result, it all depends on people outside of the UK – the juries and televoters across Europe. And I, being from a country outside of the UK, can’t deny that the song makes me smile and move along.

My verdict, then: If things work out well with the performance, I can see the song ending up in the middle of the scoreboard, maybe even closer to 10th than to 20th place. Yes, I just said that. And as the last words in this year’s line-up check series, I want to add: Good luck to Electro Velvet, the most storm-tossed, treated as an orphan, outcast entrant of the year. You have my support, because you don’t bore me like half of the other songs in this mediocre year.
