Latvia: Samanta Tina – The Moon Is Rising

Shi: Congratulations, me! You have now reached that stage of your life when you’re officially old. You know, that phase when a music video comes up and you scoff at it and say things like “what IS this noise?” and “the things kids listen to now. This wouldn’t have happened in my day!”

However, if I’m already having honest conversations with myself, I have often also said that it’s important for artists to get to express themselves at Eurovision – and that being able to be entirely “you” adds a lot to the overall experience of a song and a performance.

But as always, it’s a package deal. And while there’s no doubt Samanta has taken on the self-expression challenge with all guns blazing, the risk with that approach is that there is too much focus on the concept, the feel and the image… and perhaps not enough on making sure there’s enough balance there to be able to speak to a wider audience. That can be intentional – and I actually respect artists who do that and essentially say “this is for whoever it does speak to, and the result doesn’t matter”.

If the result does matter, though, then… too bad.

Prediction: Personal:

😠

Felix:
This is not what I’m turning the TV on for. This is what I’d turn the TV off for, if Switzerland and Denmark weren’t coming up next. Can I call a song “horrible” in public? Yes, I can. It’s that. Horrible.

Martin: I’m far more positive than my colleagues on this one. It’s my 27th favourite of the year! Sometimes I even listen to all three minutes of it.
