Malta are one of Eurovision’s most enthusiastic countries but as yet this hasn’t paid off with a win; the closest they’ve come to a victory was in both 2002 and 2005, when they came second. However, after Gaia Cauchi’s victory at Junior Eurovision in December, will they be able to make it a double?
Firelight are the band hoping to do so. They were the surprise winners of the Maltese National Final back in February, beating 19 other acts to win the ticket to Copenhagen. They consist of Michelle, Richard, Daniel, Tony and Leslie.
Coming Home is a country-pop song which reminds me a little of a Mumford and Sons number. It’s performed well, but I find it difficult to really say much about the song. It’s nice enough but, for me, that’s all it is – a nice, simple song which doesn’t grab me in any way at all. It’s strictly in the middle of my rankings, and it’s also currently in the middle of the pack with the bookmakers.
My verdict: This is a hard one to predict. I think it will qualify with ease but it could end up almost anywhere in the final. I think the juries are likely to score this one well, but I am not so sure with the televotes. It seems like the kind of song that people like but wouldn’t pick up the phone for en masse. However it does seem to have picked up some fan support so I could be wrong. If I had to stick my neck out, I think it will end up around 10th-12th place. Malta have surprised us before though, so I am fully prepared to be wrong!
