This time last year, we were reporting on how close Sam Ryder had come to taking the number one spot in the UK singles chart in the wake of his excellent result at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest.
Ryder returns to the chart this week with his interval act song from ESC 2023, “Mountain” – but that’s not the real story here.
For the first time ever, there are four (!) Eurovision songs in the UK top 10. And one of them, ESC 2023 winner Loreen, repeats Sam Ryder’s performance one year ago by very nearly taking top spot. “Tattoo” enters the singles chart this week at #2, which is one place higher than “Euphoria” managed in 2012.
Her double-winner predecessor, Johnny Logan, reached #1 in 1980 with “What’s Another Year?” and #2 in 1987 with “Hold Me Now”, so he still just about has the edge in terms of UK chart performance!
Elsewhere, it probably goes without saying that “Cha Cha Cha” by Käärijä (#6) is now the best-performing Finnish-language song in UK chart history – a small category, admittedly – while the UK’s Mae Muller will feel some degree of vindication following her poor result on last Saturday’s scoreboard as “I Wrote A Song” bounces back to its highest chart position so far (#9).
And Alessandra’s “Queen Of Kings” completes the foursome by debuting at #10.
Looking past Sam Ryder (#35), outside the top 40 but inside the top 100 there are also appearances for countless other ESC 2023 finalists – you can see for yourself here.
All in all, a pretty good outcome – and further proof that this Liverpool-hosted edition of the Eurovision Song Contest really did capture the imagination of the host country’s public!
